Hiking the Appalachian Trail
« on: September 07, 2006, 10:45:02 AM »

I have hiked most of the Appalachian trail, but in stages.  I could never carve out the time to do the whole thing in one shot.  It's been a wonderful experience so far.  I've skipped around quite a lot.  I think the section in Maine is the most amazing.  I was quite isolated for more than a week, and only saw a handful of through-hikers.

If anyone is considering hiking the fabled trail, I highly recommend it.  It will give you a nice perspective on life.  You will actually have the time to think about what's important to you.

I hiked the local state park a couple of years ago.  It was a very nice day trip.  I've never been into camping...

I've always wanted to run it.  It's been done before, several times.  Perhaps someday...

I bet no-one's run the English Channel!

[Actually, that's not such a joke... the tunnel's there now right?]

That I know I could do, if they decided not run the trains, or if there was a walkway they could open up.   Tongue   That's an interesting idea.

Is there a correlation to swimming a distance and running the same distance?

Even as I ask this, I realize that different running systems (constant sprint like 100m v. marathon or megamarathon) cause different answers.

i imagine the correlation would be something like 10 to 1.  specifically, i'm thinking of all those hunky iron men and powerful iron women who swim 2.4 miles and run 26.2 miles.

a mile swim is a big deal, at least to someone like me.  a mile run is much easier.  i suppose it would depend on many different factors like weight, body composition, lung capacity, yada, yada, yada.

I bow down to any lad who wants to run the whole Appalachian trail.  Now that would be a story to tell the grandkids!

Thanks for the support!  I never thought of the grandchildren angle, but I like it.  Good stories are important.
