Free Falling
« on: August 31, 2006, 07:44:49 PM »

This is clearly a small-time adventure, but I just went tandem skydiving for the first time.

Talk about a rush!  We jumped out of the plane backwards, and my instructor didn't give me any warning.  Next thing I know, the plane's flying away from me, and growing smaller by the instant.  After about five seconds of sheer terror, I got into it.  I didn't expect free falling to be so loud.  Tons of wind noise.  Seeing everything in miniature is surreal.  And then when the chute deployed, all was quiet.  A few minutes and a several twists later, we were on the ground in a very gentle landing.

I didn't expect the experience to be so powerful.  I want to do it again.  The problem is, I'm also very familiar with probability.  Making a hobby out of this just doesn't strike me as a good idea.

Anyone else ever jump?

I've never had the desire.  I'm terrified of heights.  However, did recently watch a special on base jumping.  That is truly the most ridiculous thing I have ever witnessed.  I found it perversely enthralling.  It seems that base jumpers accept that they will one day perish while jumping from a bridge or a building.  It's all a bit fatalistic.

In the special I watched, the world's greatest base jumper is killed after jumping out of a plane and then trying to fly over a bridge into a gorge.  He hits the railing of the bridge at 200 plus mph, and the result is quite ugly.

That's a long answer to you question.  You won't find me jumping out of any planes, but it sounds like you had fun!

Funny, I had this conversation with friends recently.  They won't skydive, but I would, even though I'm pretty chicken about other things, like roller coasters.

Go figure.

I went skydiving for part of a bachelorette party.  It was a tandem jump, and it was amazing.  I would do it again in a hearbeat.  I had the greatest dreams that night, falling with a smile on  my face.

I have wanted to skydive for some time.  Parasailing as well seems a worthwile endeavor.  Conversely,  Bunji-Jumping is absolutely LAST on my list.  Jumping off of a structure with a rubber band tied to my leg... Jeez!  OH SNAP!  Cheesy

I plan on going for my birthday.  I'll request that we go out backwards!  I want to watch the plane fly away......  JROB made it sound even more terrifying.
