Canoeing the Shenandoah
« on: January 11, 2007, 11:34:06 AM »

Due to some unseasonably warm weather out East over the holidays, I was able to complete an overnight canoeing trip on the Shenandoah.  It was a beautiful trip; a bit cold, but great fun.   Nearly overturned once, and was chased by a dog, but otherwise enjoyed a relaxing time.

Was the dog swimming & chasing you, or on land & chasing you in the canoe, or on land & chasing you on land?  How did you resolve that situation?

The dog situation wasn't anything too serious.  A frothing at the mouth mutt was chasing me along the shoreline, while I floated along in my canoe.  It didn't seem too interested in getting wet, but it was a bit intimidating.  No doubt I would have been bitten had I decided to come ashore.  After about a mile it lost interest and turned back.

Nah, the canoe paddle probably would've made it think twice.  It doesn't take too many smacks from a stick for a dog to learn to stay back.

Not that I would ever encourage any such behavior as striking a dog with a stick mind you.
