This is more of a vague recollection that a real story, but I recall reading that remains of an ancient city had recently been found just east of the Andes.  I suppose at the rate the jungle grows, it's possible for an entire city with pyramids, large buildings, etc. to disappear in a relatively short amount of time.  Imagine the thrill of discovering the ruins!

My favorites are:
The Rosetta Stone
The Terra Cota Army in China
Mel Fisher's quest for sunken treasure.

As a child, being raised by Grandparents in KC, the family would gather each Sunday,
my Grandfather and his brothers would tell of their rooting around in a woods at
Westport, Mo (a few miles from our house).  Out would come the "artifacts" they
found from the wagon trains camped waiting for guides, weather change, etc to
begin the trek across the plains.  One was a rifle made (it was obviously homemade)
with a bore the size of a nickel.

Jumping to the 1980's, the kids (4 of the creatures) and I moved to Orlando, FL
and would take evening walks in our new development.  Udo was a little guy but
found a pink granite Clovis point spear head...it went to school and the teacher
wanted it, so....the spear point was very good, about 5 inches long with serrated
edges.

Until recently I didn't realize what an industry this is.  Apparently some folks have made an astronomical fortune off gold coins found on sunken Spanish galleons.  Talk about a fun way to strike it rich!

We did quite a bit of scuba..hubby was an open water instructor...I was
certified but not a strong swimmer so he rigged a tow to his tanks and I
just saw the sights.  Found a quarter once, you would have thought I
found a sack of coins they way I carried on.  The kids could free dive
deeper than I could with all the gear on.  The wet suit kept me bobbing
and the current carried me off!
